Volunteering for Costa

Rica protected areas

The Volunteer Association for the Protected Areas, ASVO, is non-profit ONG, with no political or religious affinity, that was founded in January 27th, 1989. Its legal identification number is 3-002-098217-17.

ASVO’s objective is to improve the conditions and usage of volunteer work, at a national and international level, without age, sex or profession distinction.
For that, ASVO offers participation opportunities through its occasional volunteering national and international program, and its permanent volunteering national program that includes activities in Control and Protection, Environmental Education and Investigation.

Our mission

To accomplish our objectives through an effective, systematic and integral management approach, which is also highly productive, and that will strengthen the
different volunteering projects and the involvement of our members through teamwork, commitment, self development and the loyalty.

Our vision

Volunteer work that supports investigation, education and conservation of the environment, with social commitment; that establishes strategic alliances with
non governmental and governmental agencies for the fulfillment of its goals; governed by objectives and strategies that allow the organization to grow in an autonomous
way and self-sufficient, capable to fund its own projects and activities.

The volunteer work in National Parks appears to solve the lack of personnel and budget cutbacks that the Environment Ministry has to face everyday; therefore, the volunteers have become the unconditional support for the development of an important number of jobs: without it, the jobs could not be completed.

To raise the awareness on the natural resources’ conservation in our future generations is pretty important, but that is one of the alternatives to solve the environmental problem.

The participation as volunteer in a National Park is a very fulfilling activity, since it enables the personal growth from an intellectual, emotional and socio-cultural standpoint; it’s also an open space to share with rangers and volunteers from different parts of the world, and your free time is invested in the environment protection.

There are four basic reasons why the volunteer work is so important:

1. It is necessary: The social order’s participation in the protected areas is incredibly important because the economic resources in the country decrease year by year, and consequently the allocated budget to the Conservation Areas does too.

2. It increases the public awareness: It facilitates the support from the more conscious citizens, but it also creates a special bond between the Protected Areas and the volunteer, that would be very hard to create under different circumstances. Additionally it promotes some important values such as attitude and solidarity. That is why our program becomes a very practical and efficient way for the environmental education.

3. It is productive: Even with its limitations, ASVO has made a valuable effort to develop this program. This effort represents an important value added to the Protected Areas, through its various projects. For instance, we have 1500 persons participating annually in the program, investing their time in environmental education, protection, tourist’s customer service, surveillance, maintenance, design and facilities construction, trails and view points, among others: all that clearly benefits both MINAE and SINAC.

4. It is profitable: If MINAE was to pay for every single job the volunteers have done, it would have expensed approximately 102 million colones. If we estimate an annual investment of 10 millions de colones – approximate operation cost of the central office - the program, in financial terms, has a profitability of 92%.

HELP US TO SAVE THE SEA TURTLES… LEND US A HAND

Imagine a beautiful beach, free of noise and contamination, without blinding lights, without trash, without noisy vehicles, and without man-made construction intruding on nature's virgin landscape…

Imagine a beach where female sea turtles can lay their eggs, just as they have done for millions of years, without the risk of being plundered or pillaged by pets belonging to humans…

Imagine a beach where the plants and animals have a refuge…

If you can imagine this, you are ready to lend us a helping-hand in our mission.

For 4 years, ASVO, through their coastal and marine resource conservation projects, have developed projects in Matapalo, Buenavista, Punta Mala, and Playa Hermosa, on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica, to preserve them in their primal, natural state -- just like you imagined them.

You can help us to save the sea turtles!

To obtain the necessary economic resources for achieve this end, we have developed three initiatives:

1. Buy a sponsorship bond to protect the nests: The project offers this opportunity to help with the conservation of the endangered sea turtles, through 2 different initiatives: buy a sponsorship bond that costs U$ 45 or the equivalent in Colones or promote our sponsorship bond throughout your customers or partners: it will not only help on the nesting protection but it will also give you a small craftsmanship to remind you of the importance of these species and its enjoyable visit to Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast.

2. Installation of our piggy-banks: You or your company can be part of the solution, if you allow ASVO to install our piggy-banks in your facilities, to raise some funds and promote the Sea Turtle Conservation Project. That will certainly boost your environmental-responsible image among your nature-loving customers.

3. Non monetary contributions: If you would like to help us in any other way, you can provide us with any of the articles listed in our bill of materials and needs for the conservation project.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

A) If you buy a sponsorship bond, you will have several benefits:
During the nesting season:
• We will include your company’s name, your name or your family’s name in our hatchery.
• We will give you a participation certificate with your name or your company’s name, and the number of nests your sponsored.
• You (logo or name) will be mentioned in our reports and in any event related to the sea turtle conservation project.
