FRIENDS OF OSA

FOUNDATION

Founded in 2003, Friends of the Osa (FOO) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with offices in both Washington, D.C. and Puerto Jimenez, on the Osa Peninsula.

Our Mission:

Friends of the Osa’s mission is to conserve the terrestrial and marine biological diversity of the Osa Peninsula.

We implement our mission as an efficient, agile and self-sustaining organization that works in conjunction with partners to: (i) promote land stewardship; (ii) enhance the scientific understanding of tropical ecosystems and apply learnings to conservation; (iii) provide education and training for future generations; and (iv) enhance the quality of life for local communities living on the Osa.

Our vision:

To maintain a largely forested landscape surrounded by an intact coastal zone that protects the Osa’s unparalleled wealth of biodiversity while supporting sustainable human livelihoods.

OUR PROGRAMS:

Friends of the Osa has developed programs to support the development and implementation of our mission and vision. Our efforts are initially focused on the stretch of peninsula spanning south of Corcovado National Park to the tip of Cabo Matapalo. This area, or corridor, is critical for local wildlife because it serves as an extension of the national park enabling spatially extensive species, such as jaguars, tapirs and peccaries, the home ranges necessary to live and thrive. It is also an area that is highly threatened by large-scale development interests as it enjoys a beautiful stretch of pristine beach and good road access. Part of the challenge we face is to accomodate the best interests and needs of the Osa's communities, including development interests, while preserving the ecosystems and natural beauty of the Osa.

How to help ?

Contributing to Friends of the Osa
The support of individuals is vital to the conservation of Costa Rica's Osa Peninsula. Your contribution makes possible:

Wildlife monitoring and protection
Conservation of the Osa's ecosystems
Environmental education and outreach
Applied research
Sustainable economic opportunities for the Osa's communities

Every year, volunteers from around the world come to our field site on the Osa Peninsula to make a difference in conserving the sea turtles of the Eastern Pacific.

Volunteers help our staff patrol the beaches, collect essential data, and in some cases, assist with local educational outreach.

Opportunities are available during the nesting season, which lasts from June to January, and we welcome participants for stays that vary from one week to several months.

As a project volunteer, you will:

Be accomodated at our field station and enjoy three tico-style meals per day
Live in a remote area of the Osa, surrounded by primary rainforest and abundant endangered wildlife
Receive training and experience in data collection, field research methodology, and long-term species monitoring
Have the opportunity to design an independent research project for academic credit
Work in a fun, team-oriented environment
Make a real difference in the conservation of the Osa's sea turtles!

A Volunteer's Take:

Marissa Croughan describes the experience of volunteering to protect the Osa's sea turtles.
