The Rainforest Alliance

Our Mission

The mission of the Rainforest Alliance is to protect ecosystems and the people and wildlife that depend on them by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Companies, cooperatives and landowners that participate in our programs meet rigorous standards that conserve biodiversity and provide sustainable livelihoods.

Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers. From large multinational corporations to small, community-based cooperatives, we involve businesses and consumers worldwide in our efforts to bring responsibly produced goods and services to a global marketplace where the demand for sustainability is growing steadily.

We set standards for sustainability that conserve wildlife and wildlands and promote the well-being of workers and their communities. Farms and forestry enterprises that meet our comprehensive criteria receive the Rainforest Alliance certification seal. We also work with tourism businesses, to help them succeed while leaving a small footprint on the environment and providing a boost to local economies.

How can I help ?

The Rainforest Alliance believes it is our responsibility to encourage citizens and businesses to live in harmony with nature and reconcile economic needs with environmental and social concerns. Our mission is to protect ecosystems and the people and wildlife that depend on them by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. We hope that whether you are an individual or are representing a corporation, foundation, government or intergovernmental agency, you will make a decision to support our work and have the satisfaction of knowing that you have directly contributed to the advancement of our efforts.

About Costa Rica

The Rainforest Alliance has three main offices around the world: New York, Vermont, and San José, Costa Rica. We opened the San José office in 1989, to be closer to the frontlines of our Latin American conservation work. Today, our Sustainable Agriculture, Sustainable Tourism and Neotropics Communications programs are based in San José.

Bordering Panama and Nicaragua, with coasts on the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, Costa Rica hosts an amazing wealth of biodiversity. An estimated four percent of the world’s species can be found within its borders, though Costa Rica’s 19,652 square miles represent just a tiny fraction of the planet’s land mass. With more than 200 mammal species, 214 reptiles, 130 fish, 168 amphibians, 600 birds and over 12,000 different plant species, Costa Rica is a biodiversity mecca. As variable in terrain as it is in natural beauty, the country contains both tropical and subtropical climates with landscapes ranging from coastal plains to rugged mountains. Costa Rica is also a hotbed of volcanic activity with100 volcanic cones and several active volcanoes.
