THE SURFRIDER

FOUNDATION COSTA RICA

The Surfrider Foundation was started in 1984 by a group of surfers in California because the beach that they loved was being polluted. The organization spread to other nearby beaches until it membership was over 100 men, women, and grommets. In 1992 Surfrider received non-profit status from the U.S. government and was able to get financial assistance. Now the foundation has over 50 chapters- in every state with a coastline (and a few without one!) They also have international affiliates in Japan, Europe (France and Reunion Island), Brazil, and Australia. Costa Rica will be the first in Latin America.
The mission of Surfrider is the protection of the world's oceans, waves, and beaches for the enjoyment of everyone. This is accomplished through conservation, activism, research, and education (C.A.R.E.) Our chapters are community based, so local groups can see the improvements right on their own beaches and waterways. And Surfrider is not associated with any political parties. We just look for solutions to help the seashore environment.
